Apostle Sean?

Every once in a while, during my getting dressed for church I will flip the channels on the TV. A couple of months ago I ran across a worship service that was being shown and I have totally forgot the churches name. But, anyways it is based in south central Los Angeles. They were installing/ ordaining one of their bishops as an apostle. He was one that started or greatly contributed to the ministry of that church. I was taken back by this since the PCUSA has very little titles. Was I hearing this right? An apostle? That sounds so cool. To make it even better that gave him a awesome robe thingy. It was back to the ornate robes/ clothing that clergy wear. Definitely more than the robe and stole that Presby’s wear. It was black and had some red embroidered things on it. Way cool.Yesterday, I had lunch with the leader of Young Life in the Canjo Valley (Thousand Oaks, Newberry Park, Moorpark, etc). We were talking about the launch of Front Porch at CSUCI and Young Life’s venture into Cal Lutheran. He talked about what we do as being apostles. Not being an actual first apostle but the role that they played.ἀπόστολος are ones that are messengers/ missionaries. Other uses of the defintion are ones that are starting something that has never been there before or has fallen into disrepair. Such as Young Life’s reach onto high school campuses or the Presbytery’s reach into CSUCI. Last night during my devotion time I was reading from 1 Corinthians 12:27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[d]? Do all interpret? 31But eagerly desire[e] the greater gifts.  And now I will show you the most excellent way.Apostles were sent forth first in order to pave the way. In reflecting upon it, they did not have the easiest of jobs. They must have met resistance and difficulties. Probable much more than I am. But it begins to put what I am doing into perspective. I am a part of a whole, it is my role to encounter new avenues for the church, while being a messenger of the Good News. I also need to realize that I am not it. When all the pressures of everything come tumbling down, I am only a part of the body.
